My general opinion of the holiday

London is a fairly well accessible city. There are dropped curbs almost everywhere and you can find a disabled toilet in most Starbucks/Costa coffee/McDonald’s. Most of the large tourist attractions are accessible with good disabled toilet facilities. London buses are all accessible as are all black cabs, but be warned that the underground network has only a small number of wheelchair accessible stations!.

The transport to and from the island was very good but I found Shanklin, the area that I visited, did not have adequate dropped curbs and was quite hilly

My general opinion of the holiday

We had one night in London for a visit to the Royal Opera House (superb, not expensive and certainly not 'snobby'). I thought after the Olympics London accessibility issues would have improved but they don't seem to have, still bumpy pavements & steep lipped drop downs.

My general opinion of the holiday

We have a motorhome to make travelling simpler but rely on campsites with disabled facilities and understanding staff. Our visit to the Hay On Wye Literary festival was overall a very enjoyable experience as the event is as wheelchair friendly as it can be, considering it is held in temporary structures. The staff at the festival are brilliant.
We had booked to stay at Ashbrook Caravan and Camping Site in Hay On Wye as it advertised disabled facilities, but when we informed them that I need a wheelchair, they cancelled our booking. The reason they gave was that during busy periods, it was not convenient to have motorhomes leaving the site during the day. As the only routes to the Festival involved walking over fields and across styles, or a 15 minute walk along a busy main road without pavements, we needed to travel in our (small) motorhome each day. We have never encountered this attitude before on any UK campsite.

My general opinion of the holiday

I must share a story about the Jubilee Sailing Trust. I had never considered sailing or had much interest in water sports until stumbling across this charity. A few weeks later, I found myself on a breathtaking Tall Ship sailing across the English Channel as if I was Captain Jack Sparrow!

The JST has the only accessible tall ships in the world, and there's nothing you can't do on board. As soon as you arrive, disability is not an issue at all. I was on the Lord Nelson, which is specially designed to make mobility as easy as possible for all abilities - whether you're in a wheelchair or have a visual impairment. Barriers are immediately broken down - I've never had an experience like it.

It's a 50/50 mix of people with disabilities and able-bodied on board. Everyone is invited to play an active role in sailing and helps each other, taught by an inspirational permanent crew and Captain.
